  1. retirement homes

  2. By "young," what do you mean exactly? Teens or 20s? Or heck, even 30s?

By "mature and educated", I presume you are looking for a college crowd.  If that is the case I'd reccomend heading into Rice Village.  Start at The Gingerman.  It is the home away from home away from home for about half the guys at Rice University.  From there you can start meandering about the Village to see if something is more your style.

You also might consider taking a class at one of the local colleges.  UH has lots of evening classes...and extra education never hurt anyone!

Also, Houston is SO big, that it kind of depends on where you live/work.  Give us a bit more info and I can be more helpful.  Meanwhile, Welcome to Houston!

You saying "mates" leads me to think you might be British..if so...definately check out the Kelvin...also, the Richmond Arms (on Richmond near Chimney Rock) is a home for expats...also, the Stags Head Pub on Shepherd and the Black Labrador might also be interesting places to hang your hat for an evening or two.

Shoot me an email if those don't suit your fancy and I'll see what we can come up with.

    Welcome!

  3. young ..???   most likely at the mall or the theater...(amc24, Edwards)

  4. Well there's always starbucks.

  5. Pick up a Leisure Learning Paper and just choose something that interests you---a hobby class, language, kayaking, or wine tasting course and you'll be sure to meet people with interests similar to yours.  Have fun!

  6. It depends on the kind of guys you want to meet. There are always coffee shops like Starbucks or Dietrich's coffee (on Montrose). A lot of the people that hang out at coffee shops though are emo and pseudo intellectuals. Although there are of course grad students, and college students that hang out at those types of venues as well.

I have heard grocery stores are good places. Look for men carrying one of the small hand held baskets, typically those are single men.

Houston has great art museums, what about hitting up an art exhibit at the MFA or something at the Natural Science Museum, you'll probably expand your knowledge as an added benefit.

I know several single guys who go to cooking classes, such as the ones offered at Williams Sonoma, or Central Market. I would think anyone wanting to learn to cook would hopefully have something to offer in general.

Just a few off the top of my head, hope it helps.
