  1. Check out the Hoxton Hotel on near the Old Street station.  It's a nice, modern, clean and relatively inexpensive (for London) boutique style hotel.  The neighborhood isn't completely picturesque, but there are a lot of bars, lounges and clubs up that way.  The hotel even has a list of nearby restaurants and nightlife options.

I've also stayed in the Guoman Tower Hotel near the Tower Bridge, which is quite nice and in a more attractive area.  Though, I'm not sure what nightlife is in close proximity to the hotel.  London transport is great though, so you wouldn't have a problem getting around.

Some other areas to check out hotels are around The Strand, Liecester Square, and Covent Garden.  The Trafalgar owned by Hilton is smack dab in the middle of Trafalgar Square and right next to the Charing Cross tube station, so that is a decent locale as well.

  2. If Money no object the Malmasion in Smithfield rocks, you have great bars etc on teh doorstep, and Covent Garden is 30 mins walk or 10mins in a cab away.

If money is an issue and all you are after is somwhere to sleep then the Regent Palace Hotel in Piccadilly is the best for location, its 2 minutes walk from Piccadilly Circus  tube and 5 mins from Leicester Square. If you stay there expect a budget hotel some rooms have shared bathrooms and everything there is old and worn but the loaction for the money is the best you can ever hope fir.

  3. Buckingham Palace.
