  1. I've been to both and they are both great cities. But with two teenagers, I would give the edge to Barcelona.  It's a much older city than Madrid, it's on the coast but near the mountains, has the amazing Gaudi architecture (Sagrada Familia Catherdral, you can climb to the top of the spire), medieval center, underground Roman Ruins, the Rambla to stroll, shop, see street entertainers, stuff from the olympics, amusement park, aquarium,  Picasso Museum, Mont Juic Park overlooks the City.   Go to a Flamenco Show.....

  2. Go for Valencia

  3. If your kids are into art, take them to Madrid.  There are great art museums and interesting pieces in Madrid -- the old works in El Prado and the modern works, especially Picasso and Dali, in the Reina Sofia.  If they aren't, I would go with Barcelona.  Gaudi buildings, Parc Guell and the Olympic Stadium are all interesting for kids.  I would take side trips if you can.  If you're going to Madrid, go to Toledo, Avila or Segovia for a day.  They are all old historic towns, and it's nice to get out of the big city for a day.  If you're in Barcelona, go to Figueres and the Dali museum.  It's a fascinating place with surreal art.  Last year, we went from Madrid to Barcelona on an overnight train, it's possible to hit both.  Enjoy your trip!  Your kids will love Spain!

  4. I would agree with both of the previous answerers. I think you shold do both. Valencia region, specifically Alicante is a tourist area, it is not too expensive. In Alicante you can relax on the beach, enjoy great seafood and do some nice shopping. Alicante is known for its nightlife. If you stay in the center it is pretty safe.

If you want to enjoy historical things, then without a doubt you need to go to Barcelona. I recommend to take a Tour Bus. It will help you to save loads of money and all the planning is done for you. The bus will take you from one famous destination to another (like la Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's Park, Olympic Stadium, etc.) You would be able to get out of the bus at any stop and then come back at anytime you want. Bus runs every 20 minutes or so. Barcelona is more expensive than Alicante, but you can still enjoy it . When you arrive to Spain you will notice that life there is at a different pace. People start their dinners at around 9 pm and you can see all of them eating outside.

I would like to note that in Barcelona they do not speak Spanish, but Basque. But no worries, almost everybody speaks English. You will have a great time!

To be honest with you Madrid for me was not as interesting. It is modern and busy. Reminded me a lot about the United States, because they had all the stores that we had. However the food was great, but Personally I would chose Barcelona over Madrid at any time!

    Hope that helps.
