  1. Contact an agency or adoption attorney (you can find them in your phone book).  Depending on what the charges are on his record, you may find it very difficult to adopt even privately -- no matter how you adopt (international, foster care or privately), you'll have to have a home study done.  The home study will get into things like past convictions.

From what I understand if it was a crime against children, the answer will absolutely be no.  If it was a violent crime the answer will probably be no.  If it was something else, it was 10 years ago & he's changed since then I think it will be looked at on a case by case basis.

I hope this information helps you!

  2. This is not true.  You still have to go through the same process.  You will have to be approved to adopt.  And you may not be, depending on the offense.  You still have to get a approved Homestudy.  And not all families are approved!

And in some states, you cannot adopt if you have a felony at all.  If the offense was against a person (assault, rape, etc.) then highly unlikely he would ever be approved anywhere.

You need to do some serious soul searching and see if the issue which got him arrested is totally resolved to the point of it never occurring again.  In other words, if he was arrested for drugs, did he go through a drug treatment program successfully?  Does he  go to AA or NA regularly?  This would all have to be documented, and can be easily.

If he stole something, did he make restitution?  Did he do community service?  Has ha gone to counseling to deal with the reasons he turned to crime?

These are some of the issues that will be explored if you are considered.

    God luck.
