Where in the Ottawa area, can I get my imported dishes from Mexico tested for lead?

  1. It is a well known fact that "fiesta wear" dishes, which are usually red, orange, yellow or green, do have a high lead content.  It comes from the Oxide in the glazing.  It is not uncommon to see labels on them warning that the dishes should be used for decorative purposes only and not to eat off of them.  Some hardware stores will carry household test kits that will tell you if there is a lead content or not but they will not tell you what concentrations of lead is present in the dishes.


  2. Go to a drug store or big grocery store and get a Homax Household Lead Test Kit  or similar test kit. They run about $8USD and are good for paint, ceramic, glass, soil, plastic and any other surface.

    You will find these kits in the baby care section usually.
