Latest research suggests that memory is actually distributed across a large number of areas in the brain, rather than being stored in one place.

Therefore, when you remember something your brain builds the memory out of all the different component memories that you hold. This means that alot of what you remember isn't related to just that memory but something that can be shared to construct any number of memories.

the most accepted model states that there are three stages of memory storage:  sensory store, short-term store, and long-term store.

sensory store retains the sensory image for only a small part of a second, just long enough to develop a perception

short term memory (STM) lasts for about 20 to 30 seconds without rehearsal of the information

long term memory has been suggested to be permanent:  that nothing is forgotten only the means of retrieving it is lost

In reality, memory is stored in different parts of the body, making it a "mind" function as opposed to a "brain" function. The part of the brain itself that has the most to do with memory getting to where it is going is the corpus callosum. Ask anybody who practice a healing art called Rolfing and they will tell you this.
