  1. Humpty Dumpty was a good egg

He worked very hard, and didn't need to beg

He went into town to see the king

But being short, he couldn't see a thing

He wanted to climb to see much, much more

And there was a wall that was down by the shore

Well, you know the rest of it...

  2. It is not stated in the rhyme that Humpty Dumpty is an egg. In its first printed form, in 1810, it is a riddle, and exploits for misdirection the fact that "humpty dumpty" was 18th-Century reduplicative slang for a short, clumsy person. Whereas a clumsy person falling off a wall would not be irreparably damaged, an egg would be. The rhyme is no longer posed as a riddle, since the answer is now so well known. Similar riddles have been recorded by folklorists in other languages, such as Boule Boule in French, or Lille Trille in Swedish & Norwegian; though none is as widely known as Humpty Dumpty is in English.

  3. Some believe that the nursery rhyme refers to the defeat of an army in an actual historical event. For example, the defeat of the Spanish Armada. I'm not saying that THIS was the event, just that it would fit. The Spanish arrogantly thought their armada invincible, so theirs was a "great" fall or humiliation.
