Try this first.

To clean silver and 18k place jewelry on a double layer of aluminium foil in a small dish, add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and pour boiling water onto the jewelry.  Allow to soak for 10 minutes.  For stubborn tarnish, pour off water and rub jewelry with wet baking soda paste, rinse.

This is the scientific method of jewelry cleaning.   The foil somehow pulls the dirt from the piece.  Cheaper and more efficient.
