After three years of cleanups, the federal government has achieved no better than a 1 percent solution for the problem of trash left in Southern Arizona by illegal border-crossers.

Cleanup crews from various agencies, volunteer groups and the Tohono O'odham Nation hauled about 250,000 pounds of trash from thousands of acres of federal, state and private land across Southern Arizona in 2002 to 2005, says the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

But that's only a fraction of the nearly 25 million pounds of trash thought to be out there. http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/140004

  1. My guess is the land out there is so treacherous that your average person could not safely go out there and clean up. Obviously you'd need a large group w/ emergency personnel & safety measures in place in order  for a successful clean up. And besides that, any trash collected is just a drop in the bucket in the larger sceam of things. I think Al Gore is probably more concerned with larger environmental issues and not litter scattered across the desert. It is unfortunate mankind doesn't value the land on which we live. It is also unfortunate that "tree huggers" and environmentalists are looked down upon. Doesn't make sense to me.

  2. Sounds more like a problem with Bush and company failing to keep the borders secure than with Al Gore and the tree huggers.

  3. I hate to tell everyone this but the number of illegals coming into our country is everyones problem. Liberal and conservative. We have to work together on this one to end it. Stop the illegals you stop the trash. End of story.

  4. So you're blaming people crossing the border and leaving trash all over the desert on Al Gore now too?  That's very creative!

  5. Maybe they are out hugging trees?
