  1. America, as in the United States of America, is in North America.  It is bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.


  2. -  It is a point of some annoyance to Latin Americans, that USA coopted the term "American" for their exclusive use. In government or UN publications you frequently see the term "Northern America" or less commonly "Anglo-America". The latter is increasingly becoming less accurate since almost 12% of the residents of USA speak Spanish at home.

    -  Of course, the problem with "Northern America" is it doesn't distinguish USA from Canada. There isn't a good solution since estadounidensenses is very awkward.

    - The founding fathers anticipated this problem. Benjamin Franklin in particular felt the USA was an extremely ugly name for a country. The clear runner up for the name for the country was Columbia, and is preserved in the name of the federal district (District of Columbia). Mostly people just say Washington DC.

  6. You may be referring to the United States of America, commonly called America; or to North America, South America, or Central America.

    The Americas are the large continents in the western hemisphere, immediately west of the Atlantic Ocean and on the East side of the Pacific Ocean.

    North America is the northern continent.  It includes Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

    Central America is the isthmus connecting North and South America.  It contains Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Panama, and El Salvador.

    South America is the southern continent containing Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile.  

    Hopefully I didn't leave anyone's country out.

    To Sammy:  Greenland is not part of North America.  It is the world's largest island and, although close to Canada, a self governing territory of Denmark.
