Where is Hogwarts based upon?

I'm applying to St Andrews and its a beautiful university in Scotland in the middle of no-where, the oldest. I'm told that's probably where Hogwarts is based upon. I remember hearing Hogwarts is based upon Edinburgh Castle partially.

Tell me where it is based upon with an accurate and relevant source link.

Thanks!

  1. i think that the book was based on Edinburgh Castle but the movies were shot in Scotland,  so that could be why people think that it's based on St. Andrews.

  2. probably some old castles in england or scotland. jk rowling got the idea of the harry potter series on a train travelling in england, so maybe she was influenced by some old english castles, since she lives there.

  3. I'm considering St.Andrews too. Don't know about the Hogwarts thing but the author is Scottish.

  4. I read an interview somewhere, where JK Rowling said that she got the idea for the story while riding on a train across the english country side, past some castle....

"Is Hogwarts possibly located in Scotland? I am an American and have never been to the United Kingdom, but from reading the first book and going by the train station Harry leaves from and how long the trip takes, I am guessing it may be Scotland? Thank you."

"You are absolutely right. If you travel north from King's Cross, you do indeed arrive in Scotland." -Barnes & Noble chat transcript, Barnes&Noble.com, September 8, 1999

Q: Can Muggles see Hogwarts ? (Melinda, 11, CA)

A: Aaah - who asked that? Smart Melinda! You find out in Book 4. When they look towards it, as a safety precaution, they see a ruin with a sign saying it's unsafe. . .they mustn't enter. They can't see it as it really is.

Q: Can American kids go to Hogwarts ? (Kelly)

A: No, they have their own school. You'll find out in Book 4. Hogwarts just serves Britain and Ireland.
