  1. Without knowing what direction you were looking, it's hard to say.

Most likely, if you were looking south, you saw Antares, which is a red supergiant star in the constellation Scorpio.

Jupiter rises in the east around this time of night, and it's very large and bright, but it doesn't look red at all.  It's more of a cream/yellow color.

By 10:30 or 11 pm, Mars may have already set.  You can see Mars right now, by looking west after sunset.  Mars and Saturn are both low in the western sky after sunset.

  2. Mars is located in an orbit around the Sun, not in western NY.

OK, at 10:30PM Mars is very close to the horizon in the west.

It probably isn't visible in WNY unless u are on top of a big hill south of Buffalo.

Saturn is closely following it but is it not very visible naked eye.

Jupiter is just rising in the east and also very close to the horizon. It is very naked eye visible but u would also need to be higher up and at a dark location. But this is the one u probably saw.

note all planets follow the ecliptic (the line the Sun traces)

  3. See link below for a nifty planet finder from your location (under the date section select New York from the drop down list and you can see where it is...change the date and/or time if you want).

Note they have North, South, East and West at different points than is usual (i.e. they put East at the top for some reason) so pay attention to that to get your bearings.

  4. how big?? big as moon??

  5. mars is setting at that time.

    what direction were you looking?
