normally she is too nervous to watch her daughter compete although she was watching at the 2007 worlds

I am pretty sure they showed her on camera last night at the competition...right after Nastia realized she won.  Maybe her Mom was letting her daughter enjoy the spotlight a bit and wanted to stay behind the scenes.  No matter what the reason, last night's gymnastics was awesome.  I am so happy for our Gold and Silver medalists!  Way to Go Girls!

Duh, Ashlee, of course Nastia's father would be there - he's also her coach.....

I haven't seen her there. It's mostly her dad that shows up because he is more obsessed with it than she is, seriously. I don't remember seeing her mom but her dad is always there.

T-ball games and ballet recitals do not pose the physical danger or emotional sacrifice involved in these games.  I'm sure her mother is also painfully aware that her daughter's future identity and likely well-being could be determined by their outcome as well.  With so much on the line, I can understand how an anxious person who wants only health and happiness for her child but also wants her child to achieve whatever goals she sets could be completely overcome by worry.  It's unfortunate, but in such a case she may deem her presence would cause them both more stress than her absence.  It's too bad but. . . lay off. Eh?

She was sightseeing Beijing!!  It makes her nervous, so she asked Nastia if she needed to stay in the building and she "graciously said no."

i think that's the worst thing i've ever heard of!!  how many parents break their necks to get to every t-ball game and ballet recital - and you're going to miss your child competing in the Olympics and winning gold.  unbelievable.
