Obama is not particularly wealthy relative to the average senator.  However, he earned $3 -5 million from book sales in the past 4 years. Obama has two best selling books.  The first book, Dreams of My Father, took off and sold enormous amounts after his 2004 speech at the Democratic convention.  He then published "The Audacity of Hope" which is also a best seller.

Some of what he has today is because he's taken money under the table from lobbyists so he doesn't have to report it.  He's not done anything that could net him enough money to run for president.  He's gotten monetary help all his life.  The N e g r o College Fund (isn't it funny how Yahoo won't allow me to type in a legit college foundation) and other sources like that.  He's been caught taking money from criminals within his midst.  He's even had to fire a few because they were caught and he didn't want to be associated with them.
