I think it is where the golden spike was placed for the first transnational railroad.

  1. Promontory Point, Utah is where the final "Golden Spike" was driven.  It was hooked up to telegraph lines, as was the spike maul that drove it home, the clicks of the contact transmitted across the country.  A simple telegraph message followed: "Done."

The SP and UP built a fill and bridge across the Great Salt Lake to shorten distance, so the original point where the rails met is no longer in service, but it is close to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah.

  2. Northern Utah. Go to nps.org for more info.

  3. Utah

  4. Indeed, it was Promontory, and is, as others have said, located in Utah.  The golden spike, however, wasn't actually driven into the railroad tie as gold is much too soft to withstand such force and pressure.

  5. promotory point, utah

  6. Yup, they are right, good old Utah, I have a comment, and I dont know if this is true.

The answer about the golden spike being too soft to drive is accurate of course, but i was always told that the hole was prespiked and the iron spike pulled out so the true gold spike was indeed driven in.

Am I wrong, because I always believed that and now I will lay awake at night wondering if the Easter Bunny is not really the one that drove the Golden Spike that completed the Santa Claus Express to the North Pole.
