Do people write many programs in it? What are its restrictions? Should I learn a different language?

  1. visual basic is very restricted. you only design simple applications with it

  2. VB was created for Rapid Application Deployment (RAD). Before .Net and Java the two primarily available

    languages were C++ and VB.

VB had a very easy to learn interface and thus could be

used by individuals who didn't have all of the programming background required to use C++.

But that does not mean REAL programmers didn't use VB, they did, they just didn't tell anyone, because VB

got such a bad rap from poorly written and designed programs.

With the advent of .Net, VB.Net has become more

of a standard type language, but .Net also supports

C# - the next evolution of the C style languages.

At this point, there are a lot of companies that have a

lot of legacy vb6 code, and a lot of companies using

C#. If you are going into the field I would start by learning C#, and if some company you work for needs

an old vb6 program modified/upgraded worry about

vb6 then, it will tremendously easy if you already know

    a newer language like C#.

  3. I love that first answer!

I would highly recommend going with C#.  It's the new(er) language, and there are tons of job opportunities for C#.NET programmers, and web developers.

VB6 is so old skool.  And VB.NET is just a throwback for VB6 programmers to bring them into the .NET world.

  4. Visual Basic was made specifically for companies that cant afford to hire REAL programmers.
