  1. There are actually affordable hotels in NYC, you just have to look a bit.

If you want a traditional hotel/motel room, try AppleCore Hotels. They have a Ramada Inn, Comfort Inn, La Quinta Inn, and a Red Roof Inn. All are clean, in very convenient neighborhoods and a great value, around $150 a night. Even lower and in a great location (west side of Greenwich Village) is the The Larchmont, a european style hotel with B&B like accommodations. The average rate is around $100 per night. Rooms are clean, continental breakfast is included, they only downside is there's a shared bath on each floor...which isn't awful because it's a small hotel with around 6 rooms per floor. Rooms are small, but what NYC hotel rooms aren't? Even the high end places have small rooms here...besides it NYC, how much time will you be spending in your room..

  2. Trust me I have been there and there is NO such thing as a cheap hotel. Be prepared they are very small and not very attractive. Other than that New York is great!!

  3. 300 West 30th Street

at 8th Avenue New York, NY 10001

the rates are really good and i don't think the area is bad to stay in .

They have dormitory type rooms but they also have private rooms with a bath.

there use to be a couple of hotels you could stay in cheap, portland square hotel, pennsylvania, and milford plaza but they have all raised thier prices .

    Good luck

  5. I agree with first poster - NYC is not cheap you are lucky if you get below $300 a night.  having researched this some I have read good things about 'The Pod' (which used to be Pickwick Arms) - if you don't mind shared bath - this is apparently the place for you - low $200s.  Its clean, modern and hip LCD screen and free WIFI.  I have also stayed at the Milford Plaza Hotel - perfect location but it may not be as cheap as it used to.

but if you're more claustrophobic - I learned during a training trip in Teaneck New Jersey that I can stay at the Glenpointe Marriott - get huge rooms, clean and only be be 20 - 30 minutes away from Grand Central station.  There is a bus outside the hotel that goes directly to New York - when there is no traffic it is a breeze.  During traffic I heard it can take as long as 40 minutes to an hour.

Check out tripadvisor.com reviews on the hotels I have mentioned.
