  1. cheap place?  it varies, often the classifieds in your local paper will have better prices.

the corolla was mentioned, it is only a great car to buy new.  they hold their value so well that you can't touch one reasonably used.  a trick with that is to buy a Chevrolet Prizm.  same car.  same factory.  built by toyota, rebadged as a Chevrolet, parts (other than badge) are 100% interchangeable with the corolla... and you can buy it for 30% less.

also, nissan sentra, mazda protege and the mitsubishi lancer (02-05) are good reliable japanese cars that don't carry the same premium as Honda and Toyota do and yet will last just as long. i saw a 04 lancer in the paper early this month.  41K on it, under 6K asking price and they couldn't sell it.  at the same time a corolla with 50K on it sold for almost 9K...

  2. Auto Trader...if you live in Canada.

  3. A good/easy place to look is:

These are just off the top of my head, you can use a search engine like google, and type in "online car dealer" or something and youll get tons

  4. get him a something that will work for both of you, yet he'll be able to have a little fun with.  try researching some cars at edmunds.com  - car reviews - model reviews.

try looking at a mazda protege 01 or 02 (make sure it is a 2.0 liter)

or maybe a toyota corolla in older years. (they will last forever and ever)

  5. Try going to a car auction. You'll be able to find a good car there for way less than what you would pay at the dealership. Most times you'll save a couple thousand dollars. http://www.mycarauctionreview.com has info on a couple of car auction sites you can go to.

  6. There are many sources for cheap used cars. Here's an article that has about 20 different places to look, some online, some not:

Good luck. Hope you find something you like.
