Question:

Where is a good, safe shelter that I can leave my pets for Hurricane Gustav??

My family and I are probably leaving in a day or two to evacuate for hurricane gustav. (WE LIVE in New Orleans).

It is so FREAKIN hard trying to find numbers to where animal shelters are. The LA/SPCA is currently closed due to hurricane evacuation preparedness, and is not accepting animals from the public right now! This sucks!

I am getting very worried. I do not want to leave my FOUR dogs in the house. We left our ONE dog inside for hurricane katrina and then my cousin came to let him outside weeks later. I think he ran away because the fence was ripped up. We never saw him again..

Someone please help me out searching. I am going into panic mode...and I hate panicking...

  1. WHAT THE F**K IS WRONG WITH YOUR FAMILY? I DONT CARE IF I HAD TO BUY A CAR MYSELF TO GET OUT OF THE CITY THERES NO WAY I WOULD LEAVE MY ANIMALS BEHIND OR DROP THEM AT A SHELTER

SHAME ON YOU! YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON

I HOPE YOU COME TO YOUR SENSES AND ARRANGE A WAY TO TAKE YOUR PETS WITH YOU

  2. Maybe a friend can take them for you, and then when its all over, take them back. that way you won't lose your dogs, and your aunt wont get mad.

  3. There're several human shelters that allowed you to bring your pets now due to the lesson learned from Katrina.  If you have friends and family members that are stayin behind you can ask them to take the dogs.  My sister in law is evacuating with her cat but a friend is taking the dog.  If Katrina situation happens again your pets will not survive in the house depending on which parish you live in.  Find shelter that your whole family and the pets can take rescue.  Best of luck.

  4. do you have a  celler you no one of those underground things if you do leave them in that with plenty of food and water

  5. Thats so sad! I would look on Craigslist post an add for shelters!

  6. This is a difficult thing to handle. I wish your aunt would have a heart and allow your pets to go with you. Here is a webpage that lists different shelters around your area. I wish you the best and hope you, your family and your pets are safe.

  7. Oh my goodness, they are evacuating already? (Sorry, the news is oblivious to me, I avoid it at all costs...)

At best, I would rent a car and pick them up. I'm fortunate enough to live in a hurricane free zone, but we do have evacs for tornadoes, and I too have a very small car, and I have quite a few pets, but I've made dual trips to get them.

Chances are, this late in the evac, there won't be any open kennels or shelters for your dogs.

  8. You might have luck contacting these people.

"MuttShack is currently contracted by the State of Louisiana (DOTD) as part of its emergency preparedness efforts to transport pets in the event of an evacuation."

Although I think Patient Paws has the best plan. Rent a car, drive them all to a safe place to kennel them until it's safe to go back. Good luck.
