  1. Southern California statistically is more expensive to live/own in. So I'm not sure what your expectations as far as "expensive" are.

I've spent my whole life in Ventura County. It's mainly coastal and agricultural about halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Excellent weather, good schools, low crime (comparatively speaking), and I just bought a house for $180K.

Try visiting ziprealty.com or zillow.com and checking out the neighborhood statistics and real estate offered. Good sites for national info as well.

  2. I lived in Southern California for 18 years and I'm deathly afraid of the Earthquakes. However, if you can stand them, then I would pick San Diego, or around that area near the coast line. Not sure of the crime statistics there. California in general is expensive. I would suggest Arizona. I live here in AZ and in Peoria is a generally good area with low crime, housing market is low in cost for buyers now, and great schools. We actually have the best schools around the Phx area. Just a thought.

For me, I would never live in California again. Nice to visit though. :-)
