  1. anyone of those places would work...rochester is closer to lake ontario and buffalo is closer to lake erie--lake ontario is way nicer than erie...and the city of rochester might be nicer than buffalo but buffalo is probably more happening.. i would pick either of those 2 over syracuse---'cuse is kind of dumpy...

---albany might be a good choice

  2. If you like the water and want an affordable place to live, Upstate NY is Great.  Especially Central NY (Syracuse) and Western NY (Rochester/Buffalo, NY)

    Syracuse:

Syracuse has some Big Lakes close by.  Skaneantlas Lake is a great lake, but it is very expensive to live there and it is about 45 minutes from Syracuse.  Onondaga Lake is near Downtown Syracuse, but it is pretty dirty and there isn't much activity in it.  Oneida Lake is about 25 Minutes North and is a really big lake for boating and fishing.  One of the downsides of Syracuse is that there isn't a ton of great jobs there.

    Rochester:

I think Rochester is an Awesome City.  The East End of Downtown is a lot of fun (Restaurants, Bars, Nice Houses, etc.)  Traffic is pretty good and there are some good jobs around the city.  20 Minutes North is Lake Ontario, which is obviously Huge.  30-45 Minutes to the South are a hand full of the Finger Lakes.  Long Skinny Lakes formed by Moving Glaciers.  They are more rural, but still see a lot of boating activity.

    Buffalo:

Buffalo is the biggest of the 3 Cities.  Pro Football (Bills) and Pro Hockey (Sabre's) are huge for the city and create a great atmosphere.  Downtown is a lot of fun, and Niagara Falls is pretty close.  There are good jobs here too.  Here your right on Lake Eerie which attracts a lot of boaters.

    Other:

Lake George is more of a summer home community.  People live there year round, of course, but it is a lot smaller.

Albany Area isn't as popular for some of the outdoor boating activities.

  3. Lake George and Saratoga Springs have plenty of job opportunities.

But living in those areas is extremely expensive.  If you do not mind a 20 to 30 min drive you can find housing reasonably priced in the town of Wilton or Gansvoort.  Upstate NY has many large rivers and lakes with plenty of boat yards.  Try searching online Grand Island.  This is a few miles below Niagara Falls.  Country living but has everything you two are interested in.  Anchor Marina is on the island and is a large busy Marina.  Thousand Island Area such as Cape Vincent also would suit your needs.  I could spend hours naming all the towns you could look at.  Hudson river is dotted throughout with boat marinas.  Good luck

  4. Skaneateles, NY, has Skaneateles lake; it is near Syracuse (15-20 minute drive).  Great schools (Skaneateles, West Genesee, West Hill).  If you want to be close to water (15 mint. drive), but not directly on the water, it's not pricey at all here.  A nice size family home (4 bdrs., 2.5 baths for a nice house is in the neighborhood of $200,000.  There are several other lakes with in a hour, and even more a few more hours away (Onondaga (not for swimming- too dirty), Owasco lake, Oneida lake, finger lakes, Niagara falls is about 3 hours away).   The New York state fair is held in Syracuse every August, it's a really nice fair.  The mall (Carousel) is in the process of expanding and possibly becoming "Destiny USA" and being bigger than Mall of America, and has plans to be boat accessible! and have a hotel and more!  Many people in Syracuse say it's is a boring place to live, but not much worse than anywhere else you go.

  5. Dont move to NY its to expensive.  I have lived here all my life (33 years) and I am looking to get out.  Trying to find places in NC to move.  If you MUST live in NY.  South of Syracuse is very nice.  That is where I live Skan. Lake is very close and very nice.
