I am looking for a website to teach my daughter the abc's and other important things to get her started ahead of her class. Free would be great but I am willing to pay for the service.

Thanks

  1. Here are a couple of web sites I like to use for ideas.  Use the material you find to help you in developing fun activities you can do with your daughter.  The interaction and language that occurs between you and your daughter are as important as the activities themselves, so have fun!

    http://www.shirleys-preschool-activities...

    http://www.preschooleducation.com/

On the preschool education web site, be sure you explore the Music & Songs section.  It is just loaded with great songs and you will both just love singing them!

  2. Learning tools are great for children, but there are a few things you can do, without spending any money, that will greatly help your child develop cognitive reasoning abilities.

    1.  When your child asks a question such as "why is ____?" try to help them arrive at the answer, rather than just giving it to them.  If you can walk them through the steps involved, it will build an early foundation of logic.

    2.  Read to your child frequently.  Allow the child to follow along with you in the book while you are reading.  Trace your finger along the line as you are reading it so the child knows where you are at.  Even before learning the ABC's this can be a good habit.

    3.  Try to answer your child's questions seriously.  Never "dumb it down" for them.  If they ask "Why is the sky blue?" then give them a real answer.  A great resource to help with this is "Questions That Children Ask, and How to Answer Them" by Dr. Miriam Stoppard.

    4.  Instead of using cartoons and television for entertainment, play educational games.  For a preschool child, anything can be a game if you do it with them.  Counting, ABC's, and an old favorite of mine: "Which of these things doesn't belong?"  In this game you basically present the child with several objects, or pictures of objects, and allow them to pick which doesn't fit with the other.  This is an excellent way to introduce logical reasoning.

  3. As far as lesson plans and ideas, www.everythingpreschool.com has worked great for me

  4. For online stuff, my daughters really like this:

    http://www.starfall.com/

We find reading to them at home (and everywhere else we go) has been most helpful, though. We started by just pointing out letters where ever we were. Pick one letter to find each day. ("How many letters S can you find today?") Or point out letters here and there and ask their sounds.

Then take it a step further by sounding out things you see here and there. Read more (on the couch, on the floor, in the library, at the park). Make it fun.

  5. www.starfall.com is great for phonemic awareness (i.e. letter sounds, letter ID, fluency). It's designed to teach children, not teach parents/teachers how to teach children. If you expose your daughter to skills she'll being using in preK, K, 1..., you can expect not only success on her part but a vast improvement in her self-esteem. There are other things you can do with her, like reading books with her and asking her open-ended questions to encourage her comprehension skills, environmental print (i.e. knowing her environment consists of print and conveys meaning through print, suchas the McDonald's M arch represents the restaurant)...I think you'll be amazed not only by her but by yourself too. Good luck!

  6. well, you need to get in a network. Most decent Christian bookstores will have it. Homeschool a preschooler. Oh well. Library would be a choice also

  7. there are several websites but this is my personal favorite:

  8. Make sure you work on things like cutting, coloring and how to properly hold a pencil.  I am a kindergarten teacher and I often find that parents teach their children letters, sounds, numbers, shapes, etc. but they don't work on the things that children should really already know before entering kindergarten.

abcteach.com is a favorite of mine

  9. the library

  10. Lakeshore learning center.
