  1. Canberra has a very good public bus system. Most of the suburbs are built around a town centre so getting to the shops is easy. Most suburbs also have a small group of shops that include small grocery stores. They are expensive and used mainly for emergency shops.

You can catch a coach from Sydney Murray's offers daily services for a reasonable cost or you can catch a train from either Strathfield station or Central station to Kingston station Canberra.

Canberra is a very expensive city for housing and cost of living. I would suggest physically looking at the suburbs based on what you can afford and where it is that you will be working. Be prepared for freezing winters and stifling summers with little rain throughout the year.

You may find that Queanbeyan which is a NSW town next to the ACT is a lot cheaper.

  2. you should live in woden or tuggrong so u can get to the interchange and catch the bus to work or anywhere.

you should catch murries coachs so u can get to sydny,

  3. Depends where you work.  You do not say that, so it is not possible to recommend any particular area.  There is no cheap housing in Canberra though, specially not within walking distance of major employment centres.

Buses here run through the suburbs.  This is called the scenic route and can be very slow, though some particular bus routes are quicker.   On the other hand there is another "express service" which runs Tuggeranong -  Phillip - Civic - Belconnen bus stations and only stops in those places.  (These areas are main employment areas and have shopping malls)  Typically 10 minutes Phillip - Civic.

I do not use the buses.

If you were working in say the Health department for example, then places like Lyons, Chifley, Deakin, Curtin might suit.  If you were working at Fyshwick you could be in trouble as there is not much housing near there and not many buses as far as I know.

Canberra has a lot of off-street bicycle paths which are sometimes more direct than streets.  I've been cycling to work on and off for 18 years.  It is actually quicker than driving.  From my place walking is nearly as quick as driving.  Since it hardly ever rains, this can be a real time and money saver.

Sydney Canberra return - train, bus, plane.  Bus is probably the most convenient.

Look carefully at a full map of Canberra.  You can find them on the net, even Google Maps / Earth.

The bus timetables are probably on the net too.  Look for "ACTION bus".

  4. Hi,

Depending on which area of Canberra your looking at most places are walking distance to shops and bus stops however there are marked cycle paths and dedicated cycle lanes on all the major roads in Canberra.

The best thing to do is to look at the allhomes website which is Canberra major real estate website and most sucessful as well.

As for getting from Canberra to Sydney you can either fly, catch a bus or catch the train.

There are two bus companies that go to Sydney from Canberra which are Murrays and Greyhound. Murrays are the cheapest as they only charge $15 one way and can drop you off at the Sydney International Airport which Greyhound does as well but slightly bit more expensive but not much.

Plus it depends on what time of the day you need to get to Sydney because Murrays have 9 trips to Sydney a day and I'm not sure how many trips Greyhound does.

It's a 3hr express trip from Canberra to Sydney via Sydney International Airport with both companies.

They both leave from the Jolimont Centre in Canberra City Centre on Northbourne Avenue.

In regards to train to Sydney that takes longer which is a 4hr train trip but if your not in a hurry to get to Sydney it's pretty nice because you get to see more of the countryside then you would do in a car or bus and you get a nice view from the windows of the train.

As for buses in Canberra there's a bus network which covers all of Canberra and on some routes which are mostly on the inter-town routes which connect you to the major town centres such as Tuggerangong in the south, Woden in the south, City, Belconnen and Gungahlin in the north. On those routes you can put your bike on the bike rack on front of the bus.
