  1. Get Rick Steves' travel guides.  His advice is the best, and the easiest to sort through, as far as locating accommodations and tourist attractions.  Leave Fodor's, etc. at home.  My favorite city is Munich.  Neuschwanstein Castle and the Dachau concentration camp are both within a short driving distance, and there are lots of sights (and atmosphere) within the city.
