Question:

Where is a good source for cloth napkins?

I want to cut down (or out) our use of paper napkins. I thought about using washcloths or bar towels, but I'd really like something a bit more "dinner table-ish". Do you have any good source?

All the ones I've seen in stores are dressy holiday dinner ones and really more expensive than I'd like for everyday.

Thanks!

  1. The use of cloth napkins as a good alternative to paper napkins is a misconception. Paper napkins are available made from recycled paper. Paper napkins break down in landfills. Cloth must washed after each use.

This alone will tell you that recycled paper would use much less energy than cloth. You could dry them outdoors to conserve energy but, this would be difficult with the weather.

When was the last time you saw a cloths line?. 6 kids, my mother used the line as much as possible.

  2. Firstly it is really great that you are making an effort to help the environment, every little step will result in a greater world.

This article is about cloth napkins and contains links, hope it helps.

Even better - make your own. Charity shops often have fabrics and you are killing two birds with one stone, helping charity and cutting down on emissions created by manufacturing, processing and transporting new fabrics.

To be honest with you cotton isn't the eco friendly product we imagine it to be, it use more chemicals than most other crops take a look at this:

  4. Great idea! I gave up paper napkins years ago and am totally glad I did. It is a really classy way to dress up a table, it saves me money, doesn't create trash to fill up a land fill, saves trees, and I get to feel good about that too. It's the balm.

One place you can find cloth napkins is in second hand stores, another place is in factory out let stores. But my favorite thing is to make my own. I go to a fabric store and buy cloth with a pretty pattern I like, that say, matches my plates, or is reflective of the season or holiday...usually a good washable cotton blend that won't require a lot of ironing... . I cut it out in squares, fold over the edges and hem them up when I'm sitting around relaxing in the evening... or I get a friend who has a sewing machine to zip  up the edges real fast. It's really easy, and makes me feel good to use ones I made myself... again...great idea. Do it!

  5. Everyday...Linens & Things, Pier !, Kohls, Bed, Bath and Beyond.  You can shop online at all of them if they are not in your area. Washclothes or bar towels would be tacky.
