Where is a good store for plus-sized women's suits?

My mother is a lawyer and she just got hired by an upscale downtown firm. She needs to buy new business suits, but she is having trouble finding classy suits that aren't hundreds of dollars. Any suggestions? She is about 5'6" and a size 14/16.

  1. Many plus-size apparel sites have "Career" sections.  Try these:

    Lane Bryant

    Kiyonna

    Igigi

    Avenue

    Nordstrom (more pricey)

    Fashion Bug

  2. Sometimes you can get lucky at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Nordstroms Rack, etc.

  4. Honestly, with suits, you very much get what you pay for.  That doesn't mean you can't score some good deals on a sale rack at a department store or in an outlet village.  And no matter where you get your suit, it's also worth taking it to a tailor and getting it altered for the absolute perfect fit for the few extra dollars, especially if it is for business.

So, if on a tight budget, I'd look on the sale racks of the big department stores first.  I'd go to outlets for labels  like Anne Klein, Jones New York, Banana Republic.

Then the next stop would be catalogs and the internet where you can find lesser priced suits.

For a listing of those (plus department stores that carry larger sized suits on-line) see our Plus-Size Business and Career Clothing Directory Listings at:
