  1. Devil's Lake, Irish Hills area located in the southeastern part of the state

  2. Grand Rapids.  I was there Sept 2007 for a weekend of fun.  Visited the zoo, botanical gardens, Gerald Ford Museum.  I stayed at a Red Roof hotel which was very economical and in good condition.  Beaches are about a 30 minute drive away.  Check out the grcvb.org website.  It will give you more info on Grand Rapids.

  3. It depends on what you mean by inexpensive.  I love the Gaylord area.  There are a lot of lakes, golf courses, and places to shop.

  4. Diane,

http://Michigan.org is the official tourist website for Michigan.  I suggest looking on that site under Places to Stay. There will be several choices from Hotels to Camping.  Many northern and UP hotels/motels were offering inducements to get visitors.

The State of Michigan allows online camping reservations with an 8.00 fee. This website explains some of the pricing.

Alternately, you could try a service like http://VRBO.com to find a rental home for your vacation. Most likely this would be more expensive.

Ludington State Park does have some tent sites available in the Cedars that are not in the reservation system. These were around 16.00 per night but gave you access to modern showers and toilets.

  5. Taquaminah Falls (sp?) - in the U.P. beautiful area and they have camping / cabin rentals in the area.  Fancier cabins are more expensive, but you can get away with a pretty inexpensive trip if you don't go extravagant.
