You could try contacting these people. I know there are dealers, specifically in compacts. An antique shop (not junk shop!) may be able to give you some contacts. I wouldn't put it on e-bay until you know exactly what you have there, it sounds quite interesting, they can be very collectable and worth quite a bit.

I am not sure about the compact, but the The MV Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks on 21 June 1948. 492 passengers had paid the £28 10s fare to travel to Britain in search of work. .

May be this is a souvenir of the boat.
