1. Do not go on eBay, you're not experienced enough to pick out a guitar best suited to your needs.

2. Go to your local used musical instruments store, not a pawn shop. At most all used music stores they test out each piece of equipment before buying it to make sure it works correctly. And while you are there explain you situation (and budget) to the clerk or salesperson. They will most likely be able to guide you in the right direction.

3. Always get a really good set of strings, they'll keep in tune longer. Always replace strings every three months unless you play all the time, like a band, then they change them much more frequently.

Avoid buying from catalogs that do not specialize in musical equipment. The quality control on these items is sometimes very poor.

Same goes with somewhere like cash converters. Yes, they may be cheap, but this is often because shops like this don't fully understand what they are selling and therefore quality may also suffer.

The best bet (if it's an option) would be to head to a local music shop. These are often run by keen musicians who can advise you on your options and frequently offer second ahnd guitars for sale.

Ask at anywhere that teaches guitar if they have any to loan. Often old students donate them.

try a local music shop or order from musicians friend.com, zzsounds.com or guitar center.com. and ibanez and epiphone have some cheap good quality guitars. schecter has some good priced guitars also. acoustic guitars on the other hand are mostly, not that expensive
