I am going on holiday to Northern Spain this summer and was hoping to get some good travel tips. Where would you recommend going? Also, is there a good place to relax and sit in the sun?

  1. Sebastian ,Bilbao, Quenca,Victoria,Vigo all lovely there and all great to sit and relax in the sunshine, have a lookhttp://www.spain4uk.co.uk/northern_spain...

  2. I went to Santander for a few days. it was nice and not commercialised at all,.

  3. Asturias is beautiful. At the Easternmost tip of the region (just before you cross into Cantabria) the mountains come almost right down to the beach: it's a very quiet area, there are a few guest houses and places to camp but nothing like the wholesale tourism that's ruined other parts of Spain.

Galicia is beautiful, both for inland tourism (old churches, quaint towns, lush green landscapes) and coastal scenery; a plus if you like seafood. The city of La Coruña also has a decent beach, but stay near the old part of town if you don't want to miss out on the atmosphere.

I've heard rural Cantabria (aka Santander) is beautiful but I'd give the city of Santander itself a miss: a lot of it was destroyed by bombing in the 1930s and it just doesn't have the sort of narrow, ancient streets and venerable buildings one associates with older Spanish cities.

  4. The rain in Spain, lies, mainly in the plain's, so don't go there.

  5. Vigo.

  6. Santiago de Compostella is good; the city has a cathedral which houses the relics of St James the Apostle.  Galicia (the area around Santiago) is nice, rolling green fields and close to the coast.

Leon is in the middle of the north of Spain, and has many interesting things to see; another cathedral and a Templar castle.

La Rioja, the area which gives its name to the wines, is a fantastic place to visit, full of vineyards.

Finally, in the north-east is Pamplona, the famous city of the bull-run, but worth a visit even when they are bull-running.

If you have time, a pilgrimmage trail winds its way across the north of Spain.  It's called the Camino de Santiago and goes from the Pyrennees to Santiago.  It's a great walking holiday and gets you out into the sun.
