This depends on the layout of your roof.  You have to determine the location where it will get the most direct rays from the sun.  You should also consider shade from trees, buildings, etc.

The roof should be on a house in an area with lots of sunlight - Phenix would be good.

On the south side of the peak if you are in the northern hemisphere.  Near the peak is better, because it will provide the best chance off avoiding the shade from trees near the house.

You want it where it is safe to erect and maintain and where it will face the sunlight best, without being in shadow.

You also don't want it to spoil the looks of the home (curb appeal).

Roofs are good because the solar collector shades the roof under it and redces heat load.
