Where is it legal to post event flyers?

I'm making flyers for a local event coming up in two weeks and I can't find any informationon-linee about where is and where isn't legal to post them? Is it commonly ok to post them on telephone poles? I live in northern maine, which makes advertising difficult. If anyone has any ideas on where to place them or tips on how to gain attention to the flyers, I greatly appreciate your help.

Your best plan is to ask shops and service stations to display your flyers and in return allow free admission to your event. Also make sure you remove them afterwards. Good luck!!
