It will specifically say "issue" with a number underneath if your card has one. Many don't have an issue number on them anymore and have a valid from date instead.

On some online retail sites that aren't as flexible as they should be (First Choice airlines is a recent one I've used) the site will not allow the transaction to complete unless you enter an issue number which is kind of impossible if your card doesn't have one. In these instances I've found entering "0" allows things to go through nicely.
