  1. There are a few market gardens in the surrounding areas...for herbs and fresh vegetables in season. These areas are in the Blue Mountains to the west, the Hunter Valley to the north and the Bowral area to the south.

    Food from these places is taken daily to be sold at the

    wholesale markets at Flemington.

    Most of the other fresh food comes from anywhere in Australia. The main growing regions are in Victoria and South Australia mostly in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, and from northern New South Wales up to central Queensland.

    Produce from these areas is transported throughout the country. Some of it is also canned or frozen, but a lot of prepared foods are imported. Many imports come from China, but some come from all over the world.

    Meat for the whole country is produced further inland, where it is too dry for growing crops but suitable for sheep and cattle. The animals are transported to the various cities, which all have their own abbatoirs.
