  1. Ok, Marto has already answered your question, anyway that place is so nice! You should visit it!

  2. You have most of the info here - except to say it is a magical area - wonderful walks lead from one town to the other. Wonderful restaurants - incredible views and smells from the plants and flowers and sea - and it is at its best now or in Autumn.

Go - do not miss it.

  3. The Cinque Terre are in the province of Liguria, at the eastern end of the Italian Riviera. The nearest big town is La Spezia, but the capital of Liguria is Genoa and the entire coastline runs from the area of Cannes in France through Monaco into Italy. The rocky coastline is stunningly beautiful and I am writing this with a painting of Corniglia (one of the villages), on the wall above me.

No cars allowed, but a good train service and wonderful walking route make the whole area accessible.

  4. Cinque Terre is in the Liguria region, close to the border with Tuscany. Their name (Five lands) comes from the fact they are 5 small fishers' villages, placed along the Tirrenian Sea in the La Spezia province.Biggest towns close to this awesome seasite are Florence and Genova. Rome is abt. 200 miles far from there.

  5. First of all.....WHAT IS THE CINQUE TERRE?

Eighteen kilometers of sheer rocky coastline in northern Italy, terraced hills and vineyards sloping steeply down to the sea. Five little villages are built into the rocks between the beach and the hills. You can hike, swim, drink red wine, and watch blazing Mediterranean sunsets away from the tourist throngs in the Italian cities and the French Riviera. Centuries old footpaths and mule tracks wind about 500 to 1,000 feet above the sea, leading through olive groves and vineyards, orchards and chestnut woods.

Each village has its own character, they are a few minutes apart by train.

There are almost no cars as the villages are not easily accessible by road, but the main railway between Rome and Paris runs along the coast, mainly in tunnels.

Cinque Terre represent one of the best preserved natural and semi-natural areas of the Mediterranean; this is mainly due to historical and geomorphologic reasons which have forbidden excessive housing development and the creation of major roadways (...). Human activity and especially viticulture, have contributed to create a unique landscape in which development of the typical stone walls is so extensive as to equal that of the famous Great Wall of China.

All this, combined with the characteristics of a crystal clear sea, of architecturally interesting locations, of a varied and extensive network of paths (one of the most enviable in the whole Mediterranean), makes the Cinque Terre an increasingly sought after location among Italian and foreign tourists. This is not so much the result of a successful promotional campaign but rather the spontaneous recognition of the uniqueness of the place, of its beauty, of the enjoyment one gets from staying in or visiting it.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO THERE?

Hiking, swimming, snorkeling and just hanging out are the main attractions.

I recommend taking the local train to Monterosso and walking to the next two or three towns. The hike is steep and rugged at first but gets better as you get past town #3. The walk from Manarola (#4) to Riomaggiore (#5) is really easy. There are daily boat trips from Monterosso along the coast, stopping at some of the villages. Make sure you catch it before the last one of the day leaves. Even if you miss it you can still take the train back.

Take the boat all the way to Portovenere and get the bus to La Spezia.

Day trips to Pisa, Florence and Genoa are possible.

Try to stay two nights so as to have one uninterrupted day.

Dan Wood wrote:  My overall description of Cinque Terre: Vertical towns. Expect a cardiovascular workout; this is not a town for people who spend all their time in a car or on the sofa.

There is also a scuba diving operation in Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre tourist office is in Monterosso al Mare, in Piazza Colombo.

    NATIONAL PARK

Because of the uniqueness of the Cinque Terre, it has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The area has also been designated a National Park to protect the characteristic landscape. The Cinque Terre National Park is actively involved in recuperating and maintaining abandoned terraces. In 1997 the waters of the Cinque Terre were made a Marine Protected Area to safeguard the diverse range of animals and vegetation that are present, including several rare types of coral.

To hike in Cinque Terre, you must get a hiking permit at the little booths along the hiking trails. I recommend getting the Cinque Terre Card, a ticket that includes train travel, hiking and the bus at Corniglia. It costs €12.- for 3 days. Money collected will be used for wall, terrace, and trail repair. You'll get a map of the walking trails with the card, which you can purchase at any rail station in the Cinque Terre.
