Technically, no one knows which mountain is the "true" Mt. Sinai. The geographers moved in and picked a mountain at random based on the descriptions provided by the bible. When modern map making practices began mapping the area, they picked a mountain as close to the "mapped" area as possible.

There has been a temple on the mountain for over 1000 years, and even THEY admit that they are not completely sure that they are on the correct mountain...however, they have faith that they are closer to God because they have come to an area where He was.
