Where is the Sky TV dish installed?

I live in Victorian apartment building and I doubt the landlord would allow me to install a black dish outside, is it possible to put it inside? And where is it usually put?

Perhaps somewhere on the roof?

  1. No, you can't put the dish on the inside and i don't think you can put it on the roof either!

  2. It has to have a clear line of sight to the satellite position in the sky. It can be on the roof, side of the house, or even on a pole in the ground. Other colours are available. You can look at neighbours' dishes to get an idea of the direction, and elevation. There are alternatives, as shown in the websites below.

  3. Don't worry about this. I used to live in a rented house and our landlord was fine about us getting a Sky dish. I'm pretty sure you have the right to have one anyway..

Either way, the dish is generally screwed into the front or back side of the house, pointing into the sky so as to get a better satellite reception.

However, it is possible to buy tripods to hold a Sky dish. If you had access to a large window, for example, you could mount the dish onto the tripod and use it like a conventional TV aerial...just bigger. I have seen many of these used on caravan sites, as it isn't possible to attatch a Sky dish to the side of a caravan.

Your best bet would probably be to ring Sky first, and see if they could possibly even do this for you. If not, when the engineer comes, just tell him to leave the dish inside your house - you could probably just stand it on a coffee table.

    Hope this helps,

    Tom.

  4. Unfortunately, a SKY dish has to be installed outside.  The microwave signals can't penetrate through slates or tiles.

You can, however, mount it on the ground, or on a reasonably firm pole or post just above ground level.

Usually, they're high up a wall, or on the roof, so that they don't get knocked or someone or some thing blocks the signal - eg the dog or the cat sit/stand in front of the dish!
