  1. It's in front of the batter, where you can get better leverage against the ball. Imagine punching a target that is behind your shoulder -- it's kinda hard to get a good hit in from there, isn't it?


  2. I'm hoping the asker meant "in front of the plate or the back of the plate".  For instance, a curve could catch the front of the plate before breaking outside the strike zone or could break late and catch the back of the plate.

    In check the rules it's not really clear.  The STRIKE ZONE is defined as "...that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hallow beneath the knee cap...."

    In reading that I would interpret the Strike Zone to be the center of the plate.
