Are the people going from urban to rural or the other way around? What would you prefer? I prefer towns of about 5000 or less in population and far from any major city.

  1. US population is going from the northeast to the south and southwest directionally.

The new thing is the sprawl of cities.  People moving to big cities but living in the suburbs sometimes 20-30 miles outside of downtown. This will be a major concern as gas prices rise and many big cities have absolutely no public trans.  I prefer a mid size city... like 200 to 300K.  You have all the entertainment and essentials but not the terrible traffic of NYC, Atlanta, Houston, etc..

  2. As a whole, the U.S. populace is migrating from the Northeast, and much of the Southeast to Western states.  People have been moving to smaller communities in the west which have had very high growth rates over the last decade.

In a related note, the population in the Southwestern U.S. (Arizona, New Mexico, southern California) has grown significantly since the 1950s, when air conditioners became readily available for residential homes.

  3. I think the population is moving from urban to suburban and rural to suburban.  The small towns and inner cities are failing and the burbs are thriving.
