Atlantic Ocean is the body of water separating the Americas on the west from Europe and Africa on the east. The bulge of Brazil and the West Africa protrusion come close making Atlantic Ocean hour glass shaped. On the south it ends on Antarctica, though some call the Antarctica sea as an ocean. In the north the ocean has a big gap between Greenland and Norway, through which it is connected to Arctic sea. Its lesser bodies of water are - Caribbean sea, Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of Guinea, North sea besides the territorial seas like 'Antarctic' and 'Norwegian'. Also the isolated 'Mediterranean' ( literally, middle of the land) sea is connected through Gibraltar strait.

To connect it to the Pacific to facilitate shipping, a 36-mile 'Panama' canal was dug (built) across Panama isthmus.
