  1. Keeping in mind that I've never been to Philadelphia, so don't know what an authentic Philly cheese steak is like, I would recommend the one at Big Boy's Burgers on Kingston Rd at St Clair. They are extremely popular and made by cutting together the steak and onions on the grill as they cook, then adding the cheese (though probably mozzarella). My personal favourite is the one at The Orchid Garden in Agincourt Mall (Kennedy and Sheppard in Scarborough). Theirs is served open-face and you pretty much have to eat it with a knife and fork -- it's so jam-packed with meat, cheese and onions. Get it with their home fries, which are waaaay better than their fries.

Sorry I can't direct you to a more authentic one.

  2. As a former chef and having had them in a number of restaurants bars and other places, they are nothing like th Philadelphia ones, I have had one's from the 2 meccas of Cheesesteak, Pat's and Genos in South Philly, most in Canada and Toronto use a strip or marinated steak not cut, and the add things like fried peppers and mushrooms with the onions, and use mozzerella cheese in most, not choice and NO cheez whiz.

The best one I had was at a place on Bloor St it is not htrere now JJ Muggs and they were more to the real thing than other, some pizza palces even make a stab at it, Mr Sub too.
