  1. Guildford is one of the safest places to live in the country.

  2. Dulwich village is absolutely beautiful and tranquil.  There's an excellent train service to London Bridge - only 20 minutes away - and yet when you're in Dulwich village you could be in a beautiful village miles away from the metropolis!

  3. Hi!! Penge, Elmers End, Bromley, South Norwood, Streatham, all with good fast train services into London, and price property not astronomic.

A good common there in Streatham, Crystal palace near for sports, and Selhurst Park for football.

  4. Having lived in Teddington for a long time i can´t recommend it highly enough there's plenty of open spaces an excellent police service very low incidents of crime, ideal for raising children, close to Richmond and Twickenham and yes there is also the river and lakes, house prices can be high but i´m sure you can find something to suit your needs, i should state its a very family oriented place. Good luck.

  5. I have to recommend Leigh-on-Sea, in Essex.

45 mins max (in rush hours less) from Fenchurch Street in the city by train, on the railway line that repeatedly is top of the tables for punctuality and reliability (comfortable air-conditioned trains, too).

You are certainly near water - the thames estuary is right before you, with a good selection of places selling fresh fish, especially shellfish caught nearby, nice pubs on the sea-front too. (The area around the High Street, known as Old Leigh)

The fresh air, and smell of the sea, is gorgeous...

"Inland" (and up on top of the moderately scenic cliffs) you have the Broadway, which has more character, and a more interesting range of shops, cafes, galleries, etc, than most high streets in the area.

You also have some of the best state schools in the country nearby.

And pretty much all of the residential areas of the town are agreeable, peaceful places.

(Main drawback: you'd probably want to have a car: public transport locally, except for the railway line between London and Southend/Shoebury, is somewhat patchy)

  7. Isn't everywhere outside of London a safer to live?

I'm quite fond of my little spot on the Lancashire/Manchester border :o)

  8. A friend of mine recently moved to Edenbridge in Kent.  Beautiful countryside, reasonably priced houses, good local pubs and restaurants and an easy train journey into London for commuting.  They love it there.
