I'm coming from Edinburgh for 3 nights, flying into Newquay. Do you suggest I stay in Newquay, Truro or somewhere else. Also, should I here a car or use public transport to get around?

  1. i live in newquay....you could stay in newquay or somewhere closer to the eden project ,please hire a car...it will life easier for you.

  2. If you want somewhere gorgeous to stay near the Eden project, I would suggest Fowey, which is only 6 miles away, but  MUCH classier than St Austell, and a MUCH nicer base than Newquay, which is the ROUGHEST resort in Cornwall.( Please take advice from someone who lives in Cornwall)

I look after a lovely little cottage, which is the other side of the estuary from Fowey, it's just a little ferry ride away from Fowey, in Polruan, and is  gorgeous little fishing village, with easy acces to Polperro,Looe, Lansallos, Lanteglos, Lostwithiel, Lerryn,(where I live ) all GORGEOUS resorts that are not highly comercialised like Newquay, I will try and add links for Polruan, and Fowey (which you will LOVE)

(The cottage we look after), go through  the  "more images" link.

The nearest town to the Eden Project is St Austell, but it's a town, and not very pretty. It is in the middle of major re-vamping at the moment, (like a building site) and although it DOES have a big beach, it's a "man made" beach, and is NOT  the prettiest by far. By all means hire a car, you will need to, to see the gorgeous little resorts, although the Eden project does have easy access by bus from Fowey.

My village, Gorgeous!! A lot depends on what you want from your holiday, if you like it busy and comercialised, go for Newquay, Roche, or St Austell. If you like a quieter, classier, less comercialised resort go for Fowey, or Polruan. but enjoy your holiday in gorgeous Cornwall!!!

  3. My girlfriend and i were staying in Plymouth when we visited Edin project, Im not sure if it was served by public transport fromm Plymouth, but was only an hours drive away, The edin project is amazing!!!

bloody hot in the tropical dome thingy.lol.

Plymouth is a nice place too. nice seafront and view of the bays etc.

  4. Wouldn't stay in Newquay. It's tacky, and locals avoid it. My personal preference would be Mevagissey, near St Austell, or get a good farmhouse B&B. That's not too far from the Eden Project, and very near its sister attraction, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, being run by the same people. It's a pretty fishing village, and I have stayed there myself. There isn't all that much choice of accommodation in Truro, or St Austell town, which currently has a massive building project going on in the town centre. Both St Austell and Truro are good for shopping. I think there is a Travelodge on the outskirts in St Austell.

Would suggest you have a car. Although Truro and St Austell have quite good travel facilities, you would be limited as to where you can go, as the more rural areas have no public transport at all.

  5. I wouldn't wast your time at the Eden Project. It's the worst day out I have had. Newquay is a nice place to stay, close to beaches.

  6. Stay in St. Austell as it is nice and close and an attractive town.  That way you can arrive first thing in the morning while EP is nice and quiet.  The Eden Project gets pretty full during the summer months.

EP has public transport links but if you want to see some of Cornwall and Devon you need a car.  I'm Sorry to say that  because I discourage car use generally but you do need a car in this part of England if you want to see the places that are worth visiting.

1 hour from the Eden Project is Dartmoor in Devon.  There you can see lots of wild ponies, not to be missed.

    Have a great trip.

  7. To be honest with you, Newquay isn't a very good place to stay for many reasons: the crime rate is very high, the beaches are full of glass and needles and it's full of hippies and teenagers wearing annoying Jumpers with lifeguard written on them! There are many other nice places for you to stay relatively near the Eden Project.

I think you should try Mevagissey which is not far from St Austell where the Eden Project is, it's a small, friendly village/town with a few shops, a harbour and lovely views!

You could stay at St Austell where the Eden Project but it's not an ideal place for a holiday!

I think your better off hiring a car, I live in Cornwall and Public transport is not ideal, usally you have to switchover buses to get to your destination and some buses are only every few hours so if you miss a bus you might be waiting for ages! and trains don't run all over the county!

Hope this helps! Enjoy your stay!

  8. We stayed in the Victoria Inn, Roche near St Austell - it was very reasonable and we would stay there again.

We had our car because we wanted to visit other places as well.  If you stay in St Austell you can get public transport to and from the Eden Project, but if you stay else where you will need a car.

  9. You could stay in Newquay, but St.Austell is closer to the Eden Project, with nice hotels in the Carlyon Bay area and good beaches too. There are regular buses to the Eden Project but would recommend hiring a car if you want to visit other places, enjoy your visit cornwall is lovely.
