I need it for a summer class,

Can you find cameras at garage sales or antique shops?

What other equipment might be good to have for a beginner photographer?

  1. The best place is the craigslist ... in a city near you.

For under $200 you should be able to find a good used Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR with a lens ... sometimes under $100 if you can wait until one becomes available.  Any Nikon or Canon that is under 20 years old will be just right for your needs.  You can test the camera before you hand over your hard earned money ...

    Sample from my area:

35 mm cameras only requirement is to supply it with 35 mm film ... black and white or colour which ever you need.  There are no colour or black and white only 35 mm cameras.

  2. Your best bet would be via your local edition of Craigslist.  That's where I've bought and sold several cameras and lenses.  That way, you get to handle the camera and check it out before buying.

You're looking for a 35mm slr, and Craigslist has many.  Many photographers, like myself, have older, dependable 35mm slr's sitting on our shelves, just waiting for photo students like you!

In fact, if you were in my area, I'd have 1/2 dozen Nikon camera bodies from which you could choose.

One other possibility is looking at camera shops that carry used equipment.  There, you can talk with knowledgeable people who can guide you towards the type of 35mm slr that works best for a learner.

    Hope this helps.
