  1. genos or tony lukes!

  2. JIM'S STEAKS --- it is the best.  Everytime I visit, I make sure I have enought room in my tummy for two of those things!  (They only serve fajitas on a bun in Texas and try to pass if off for the real thing, but they're nothing like Jim's.)

  3. As an tourist (can't consider myself local as I live 45 minutes away), I have been to several of the places mentioned above.  We had the most fun going to the Pat's/Geno's area on Passyunk....and we liked Geno's best.  MUCH MUCH friendlier.  If you go to Pat's be prepared to face some very rude staff.  If you don't have your order ready and say it just right they can be total jerks.

We were told that if we went to either place we were just being typical tourists, but the sandwiches were good!  And...it was fun to see Geno in action.  I have been to Jim's on 5th too...the line was crazy, it was a good sandwich too.

My whole family thinks that they pretty much taste the same...and we think only a local would see the difference....but it seems everyone has a preference.

I don't care where I get it...just have to have extra cheese!

    :-)

  4. Since it sounds like your are from out of town so I'm going to say Geno's or Pat's. They face each other on opposite corners at 9th and E Passyunk Ave. I prefer Geno's for taste and quality. These place are the most famous. I'm sure others may have better steaks but there is a experience to be had by visiting either Geno's or Pats.

  5. Hooters!

  6. My husband likes to get his steaks at Talk of the Town on Broad Street, near Bigler.

He hates Jim's, says the meat stinks something nasty.

I'm not a fan of Geno's or Pat's, but a friend of mine said she just had a steak at Pat's and actually loved it. She loved the cheese fries as well.

  7. PATS/GENOS!! didnt they invent the phila cheese steak? ive eaten there once after an eagles game and it was amazing. you have not had a real cheese steak until uve had pats/genos

  8. Jim's

corner of 4th and South Streets

  9. Not knocking Jim's, Pat's, Genos, or Tony Luke's, which are probably the 4 most famous places for Philly Steaks, but c***k's Steaks on Torresdale Avenue has been there for so long, he survived a lawsuit saying that his name was derogatory. It was proven that his nickname and the name of the  business has been around longer than the racial slur. Definitely have to go if you're in the area.

And to the person who said you can get a Philly Cheesesteak anywhere in the US, sure you can. So by your definition, a steak at Friendly's is the same as that of a 5-star establishment, right? It's still a steak! Different areas are known for different foods; everyone else is just pretending. In fact, I can personally vouch that Jim's AND Tony Luke's both opened up secondary locations in Northeast Philly about 10 years ago. Tony Luke's didn't make it, and there are people who say that Jim's isn't as good as the original in South Philly. THEY CAN'T EVEN COMPETE WITH THEMSELVES!

  10. You can buy a nice Philly Cheese steak in just about any American city. Doesnt have to be Philadelphia.

  11. Jims Steaks. I think the address is listed above.

  12. Steve's Prince of Steaks

    Johnny's Hots

    Tony Luke's

    Cosmi's Deli

  14. GOOEY LOUIE'S

    231 McClellan St

    Philadelphia, PA 19148

    (215) 334-7668

Hidden little gem for cheap food quick. This little deli is buried in S.Philly and makes obscenely large hoagies and sandwiches for next to nothing. It's a tight little blue collar deli that is usually packed tight on Saturday, so placing your order ahead is the best route. The grill closes at 6 but they'll make you a sandwich until about 7:30, maybe even 8:00. There its quantity over quality (don't get me wrong, the sandwiches are great) and the cheese-steak carries this ability to put you to sleep shortly after.
