I have lived in the USA my whole life and I hate it here. I hope to one day move to australia to get away from this crazy place and I was wanting to know of somewhere for art, poetry, music, cafe's and creative people.

  1. I am from Sydney but I'd say Melbourne for this.

  2. Byron Bay is another option on the north coast of NSW - very alternative and artsy beach community.  Melbourne if you want a big city.

  3. St Kilda/Melbourne for culture and art.. but it depends of what kind of art your into. If its a more new-age art, then maybe try Byron Bay?

  4. Visit Ayers Rock...

    Truely amazing part of Australia

  5. Melbourne =).

Melbourne is the "cultural capital" of Australia. We have the most "arts/cultural etc. festivals" than any other city in Australia.

  6. Depends on your art style I suppose.  But for art in general it would have to be Melbourne.

  7. Tasmania.

  8. You need to move to Melbourne

Then find a nice flat in Brunswick

Go and eat at some of the Cafe's

Go for a drink at "Bimbo's"

Take in the slightly strange yet kinda cool weirdos that walk the streets

Go to St Kilda- always good for inspiration

But I think you belong in Melbourne- if art is what you are after- its the place to go

  9. Id recomend somewhere like Fitzroy in Melbourne. It's the student area of the city and has heaps of bars that have live music, poetry readings etc. Brunswick St. is become more popular with hipsters from other suburbs now (and therefore more expensive) but there is almost always something cool going on in one of the cafes there.

Brisbane is also pretty cool, but it's kind of hard to point to one area where that sort of scene exists. Fortitude Valley used to have a pretty good, grungy art-student scene a few years ago, but it has sort of fallen away as more and more people found it (and prices went up.) It has a great pedigree as being the places where legendary bands such as The Saints and The Go Betweens started playing.

Nowadays, the place for live music and arts in Brisbane seems to be moving across the river to the suburb of West End. It's a little cheaper (but getting expensive) and it's pretty much within walking distance to the National Gallery of Queensland (which had a GREAT political post art exhibition on a while back), The State Library and the Gallery Of Modern Art (The newest, and easily the best modern art gallery in the country.)

Sydney's art scene isnt very good at the moment. It's more of a place for hipsters to see and be seen to get cool points, rather than an actual arty scene. In saying that, there are occasionally some cool things to do in Newtown and Surry Hills, but usually, there is nothing that can compete with what goes on in Melbourne. The National Gallery Of NSW is well worth a look if you're here though.

Have fun. I hope you get here one day.

  10. definetly melbourne

    we have the best culture

the inner northern suburbs have very artsy people (that's where i live)

  11. I live in Brisbane, which is the @ss end of the Australian Cultural scene. Do not come to Brisbane unless you want to live in a cultural desert.

I would recommend Melbourne as a sophisticated cultural hub.

  12. Dapto ,NSW

  13. Melbourne.

    G'day to you.

  14. City or country? If country, try northern NSW. Bellingen, for example. In Sydney, most of the arty folk are between Newtown and Marrickville and Dulwich Hill.

  15. Byron Bay
