  1. First you have to decide whether you want shares ( which are risky) or unit trusts (which are less risky), or bank deposit a/c.(which is perfectly safe). Once you decide that, then we can recommend  the best co. for it.

    However, I recommend you go for a mutual fund like the Legal and General UK Index, in an account with the brokers Share Deal. This fund is one of the safest, has v.low charges and being an index tracker will do as well as the UK economy. The stock market is low now, so its potential is very good. The broker offers all the options and has some of the lowest charges. (I researched brokers for my child fund). My best wishes for your child and his/her mum. And... many happy returns.
