Where is the best place in the USA to rent a beach house?

I'd love a location where I can walk to things (boardwalk, beach, putt putt, etc.) I also want a place to rent a house, not stay at a resort or hotel. Our group stayed in Falmouth (Cape Cod) last year and loved being able to bike / walk to places. Where do you suggest next???? Thanks!!!

The best place in the USA to rent a beach house would be in the area around Northfolk, Virginia!  In Virginia, you can find nicely priced rental beach homes.

I'd go with Ocean City, MD as well. It's not as tourist-trap like as the NJ Shore.
