  1. I'm assuming you mean buying a laptop in person from a shop...

Unfortunately I think these days you're significantly better off buying laptops online. It's still advisable to check out products yourself if you're not sure of the size of the screen, weight, feel of the keyboard etc. Dell have quite a few display kiosks in shopping centres for people to check out their monitors, PCs and laptops for example. Other electrical/computer shops have many products on display but due to their turnover the prices are not usually that competitive. The advantage of the shops is however that they sort out issues very quick normally and you dont have to courier the laptop back to the manufacturer. Check to make sure of this though because it different at every shop and with every brand.

To summarise look around for the product that best suits your needs first. It doesn't matter what prices are displayed, the objective is to get a good idea if the product you want is really what you think it is (weight/size/feel etc). Once you get a price, before buying search the best prices online with staticeice (link below) to make sure the shops's not a lot more expensive.

When deciding what to get also consult the Whirlpool forums

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-thr...

There's always good advice scattered all around that forum in terms of what the good deals are the what the popular options are with laptops these days.

Also check out dell.com.au. They have quite a big range, prices are competitive and best of all they have good customer service options if you think you'll regularly run into problems this is important.

Finally check out the macbooks from apple. They're pretty good value especially if you're a student due to their educational discounts. You wont find them for under $1000 like with some of the PCs but they're a bit better quality then those cheapies... Also the operating system's a very nice alternative to Windows XP/Vista and very easy to use.

  2. Harvey Norman in Fyshwick has a good range.  Or try d**k Smith (there is a big one in Woden).

  3. You should visit a web site that uses you internet connection to find out where you live and that show material from your local shops and stores in your area.

On ebay and mail order websites like Amazon shipping costs will be prohitibive..

Remember local stores have no shipping fees and you may deal easier with the warranty and/or return problems.
