  1. Your child's dance studio should be able to refer you to someone who sells proper dancewear if they themselves don't sell it.  Otherwise, for young dancers, it's usually okay to get them at Payless or Walmart.  As they get older, they will need more specialized shoes, but not until at least middle school usually.  You can expect to pay around $20 for a pair of ballet shoes at this age.

As far as sizing goes, ballet shoes vary greatly in how they are sized, but there are ways to ensure that you're getting the right size.  First of all, start off with a size close to their current street shoe size.  You can go up or down from there.  Make sure they are wearing tights or have bare feet when they try them on, or take into account that fact that socks are a lot thicker than tights and will affect how the shoe fits.  When they put the shoe on, pull the drawstrings so the shoe fits snuggly around the foot.  Make sure that their heel is towards the back of the shoe.  Now, take your thumb and place it sideways at the end of their big toe.  There should be about half a thumb's width of room at the end of the shoe.  This will allow for growth without having so much room at the end that they are tripping over it.

Good luck - I hope your child loves ballet as much as I do!
